Things Irish, the games, music, history and culture were part and parcel of life in the Ryan household, and it was the background which inspired much of his Gerard's considerable poetic output.

As a writer of poetry, he was widely accalaimed, and his work featured in many publications in Ireland and America. He contributed regularly to the Tipperary Star and was the winner of several awards at home and abroad.
