Joan Pollard Carew was born in The Commons in the Slieveardagh hills and has been writing poetry since childhood. She lives in Thurles with her husband Michael, son Alan and daughter Helen, and together they run the family Jewellery business. She has read her poetry at the Listowel Writers' Week and Galway's Cuirt Festival, and has also broadcast on Tipp FM and Kerry radio. In 1998, She reformed Thurles Writers' Group which had been dormant for about 22 years and currently co-ordinates that group. Joan also has an abiding interest in dancing and is chairperson of Thurles Ceili & Set Dance Club. Moll Strings & Others is her first collection of poems.
