Risterd Mulchay is the second son of Richard and Mary Josephine Mulcahy. His father player a leading role in the military and political evolution of the state from 1916 to his retirement from politics in 1961. Richard Mulcahy was in intimate contact with the other military and political leaders during these years. Risteard, who has a longstanding interest in recent Irish history, encouraged his father to record his views of the leaders and events during his career. These memoirs contain Richard Mulcahy's recollections of his many political and military colleagues, and of the events that particularly impinged on his own career. They provide an account of his own family background in Waterford and Tipperary, and of his later life in his home in Rathmines, Lissenfiled, where he lived for 44 years after the foundation of the state. The memoirs also provide a record of his wife's family, the Ryans of Tomcoole, Co. Wexford, some of whom played a leading role in the independence movement and in the subsequent evoloution of the Free State and the Republic.
