Description
This volume is a comprehensive guide to the castles, bawns, town defences and fortified houses in the counties of Clare, Limerick and Tipperary which form the northern half of the province of Munster.
An introduction describing the development of castellated buildings of stone, dating from the beginning of the 13th Century to the mid 17th Century in North Munster, is followed by three gazetteers describing the history and architecture of over 335 such buildings.
The gazetteers are illustrated with many plans, drawings and photographs, and there are also two maps showing the locations of surviving buildings. Lists at the ends of the gazetteers give summary information on another 120 buildings of which there are now only minor remains, and there are lists of sites of former castles.
