It is June 1963. at long last the freedom of summertime has arrived for Jonno and his brothers, Paudie and Jim, and his friends Judo and Horse. They can leave behind the tyranny of school and the sour looks of Brother Virgilius. Now they are free to run below the foothills of Sliabhnamon to their heart’s content in their make believe world of cowboys and indians.
That summer becomes a time of beginnings and endings. President John F. Kennedy, with his impossibly white teeth and movie star good looks is visiting Ireland. People in the villages and towns listen to his speeches on the radio. But poverty is rampant. The blight of emigration pulls families apart. Life, however, is simpler. The gentle rhythms of country life enfolds us.
Scenes From An Indian Summer is set in Fethard, County Tipperary. It is a beautifully written collection of stories of childhood memories.
